Understanding 2-Stroke Mix Ratios

Two-stroke (or 2-cycle) engines do not have a separate oil reservoir like 4-stroke engines. Instead, the lubricating oil is mixed directly into the gasoline. Knowing the correct proportions is essential for engine health and performance.

Common Ratios:

  • 50:1 - Very common for modern string trimmers, chainsaws, and blowers. (2.6 fl oz per Gallon / 20 mL per Liter)
  • 40:1 - Common for slightly older equipment or specific brands. (3.2 fl oz per Gallon / 25 mL per Liter)
  • 32:1 - Often used in older outboard motors and 2-stroke dirt bikes. (4.0 fl oz per Gallon / 31.25 mL per Liter)

How to mix:

  1. Always mix fuel and oil in an approved, clean fuel can — never mix directly in the engine's fuel tank (unless specified by the manufacturer).
  2. Pour half of the required gasoline into the can.
  3. Add the full amount of measured 2-cycle oil.
  4. Close the can and gently swirl to mix.
  5. Add the remaining gasoline and swirl again gently.
