Understanding Load Bank Testing

Load bank testing is a preventative maintenance practice used to ensure a backup generator can perform under varying electrical loads.

Generators, especially diesel engines, should not be run consistently at light loads. Running at less than 30% load can lead to "wet stacking", where unburned fuel accumulates in the exhaust system.

  • 25% to 50% Load: Warm up and initial performance validation.
  • 75% Load: Standard operational load testing.
  • 100% Load: Validating the generator can meet its fully rated capacity without overheating.
