dBA

Found in specs. Standard portable generators are 68-76 dBA. Inverters are 52-60 dBA.

Manufacturers usually measure noise at 7 meters (23 ft).

How Distance Affects Sound

Sound drops off quickly over distance. This phenomenon is governed by the Inverse Square Law. In an open field (free field), every time you double the distance from the sound source, the noise level drops by approximately 6 decibels (dB).

  • Formula Used: $L_2 = L_1 - 20 \cdot \log_{10}(d_2/d_1)$
  • Factors: This calculator assumes open air. Obstacles like trees, fences, or buildings will further reduce noise (blockage). Reflective surfaces like concrete walls can increase it.

Decibel Reference:

  • 50 dB: Quiet home, light rain.
  • 60 dB: Normal conversation. (Inverter Generators)
  • 70 dB: Vacuum cleaner, city traffic. (Standard Portable Generators)
  • 80 dB: Garbage disposal, loud music.
