Understanding BTU to Tons of Cooling
In HVAC and refrigeration, 1 Ton of Refrigeration is defined as the rate of heat transfer required to freeze 1 short ton (2,000 lbs) of pure water at 32°F in 24 hours. This equals exactly 12,000 BTU per hour.
Formula: Tonnage = BTU/hr ÷ 12,000
1 Ton = 12,000 BTU/hr = 3.517 kW (thermal)
