Understanding the Conversion
Horsepower (HP) is a unit of power typically used for mechanical output (like engines and motors), while Watts (W) are used for electrical power. Knowing the conversion helps you size generators for motors and vice-versa.
- Electrical Horsepower: Used for electric motors. 1 HP(E) = 746 Watts.
- Mechanical Horsepower: Often called Imperial HP. 1 HP(I) ≈ 745.7 Watts.
- Metric Horsepower: Used in Europe/Asia. 1 PS/CV ≈ 735.5 Watts.
This calculator uses the standard electrical conversion of 1 HP = 746 Watts.
Formulas Used:
Single-Phase HP = (I × V × Eff × PF) / 746
Three-Phase HP = (I × V × 1.732 × Eff × PF) / 746
